Our favourite place in the world is Liverpool, the city in northwest England, located on the River Mersey. The UK’s fifth largest city was voted as the European Capital of Culture for 2008, in recognition of the city’s cultural, musical, sporting, artistic, and nautical heritage. In fact, after London, Liverpool has the most museums in the UK. Many of its architectural landmarks have been granted World Heritage status, including the Royal Albert Dock, St. George’s Hall and the famous Royal Liver Building. As the city’s symbol for over 800 years, the magnificent metal Liver Birds have held position across Liverpool’s breathtaking skyline since 1911. Perched atop the historic Liver Building, the Liver Birds are said to have originated in 1207 when King John was granted a Royal Charter to register the city of Liverpool as a borough. Needing a unique seal to differentiate documents and sterling from his territory, the symbol of the bird was chosen. The myth of the Liver Birds - one female, one male - is that if they were to fly away, the city would fall. One looks over the water, protecting the seamen. While the other, looks over the city, protecting its people.

The people of Liverpool - known as Scousers - are some of the friendliest. The city is also proud of its diversity, the result of previous migrations to Liverpool’s large port. The earliest mosque in England, for example, was founded in the city in 1887. Additionally, Liverpool is home to the earliest Chinese community in the UK. The city also boasts two impressive cathedrals, and the Anglican Cathedral is the largest cathedral in the UK, and eighth largest in the world. Liverpool is known for its rich musical history and vibrant music scene, having produced many famous musicians, including the Beatles. Additionally, its football history is both a divisive and uniting thread within the city. The city’s two football clubs - Liverpool and Everton - share a friendly rivalry and dozens of major trophies between them. Liverpool’s motto - You’ll Never Walk Alone - is embraced by all those in the city, making it the most welcoming place.

During our most recent visit to Liverpool, we caught some of our favourite views on 35mm film and here you’ll find a gallery of these captures.
